When Life Has Other Plans

Interruptions Reveal Our Rhythm

Have you ever noticed how quickly we write the story of our day?

We know where we're going.
We know what's supposed to happen.
We have a picture in our minds of how the day—or the evening—is going to unfold.

And then...

Life has other plans.  I think we've all been there.

A meeting runs late.
A flight gets delayed.
The phone rings with unexpected news.
The plans we've been looking forward to suddenly change.

It's a reminder that while we can make plans, we can't always control what happens next.

That happened to us this weekend.

We had spent the evening prior seeing our Aussie friends, the Hindley Street Country Club, in Beverly, followed by a wonderful day exploring Rockport with friends.  As we were driving home, tired in the best possible way, replaying their music, laughing about our adventure, looking forward to sleeping in our own bed...

...our van decided it wasn't quite ready to head home.

Instead of pulling into our driveway, we found ourselves on the side of the MA Pike waiting for a tow truck. When it finally arrived, we learned it wasn't equipped to tow our van. We'd have to wait all over again for a larger tow truck.

Definitely not the ending we had planned.

After a few post updates, and an image of us sitting inside the coach watching television while we waited for the second tow truck, a friend wrote,

"That's true calmness right there."

That comment made me pause.

Not because I thought I had handled everything perfectly.  Believe me, I would have much preferred to be home.  But she made me realize something I hadn't thought about until that moment.  Years ago, I'm not sure that's what people would have seen.

Not because I was a different person.  But because I had practiced a different rhythm.  That realization followed me home.  Maybe interruptions don't create our rhythm.

Maybe they reveal it.

When life catches us off guard, we rarely become someone new in that moment.  We simply return to what we've been practicing.

If we've practiced rushing, we rush.
If we've practiced worrying, we worry.
If we've practiced assuming the worst, that's often where our minds go first.

But if we've practiced pausing...
Breathing...
Accepting what we cannot change before deciding what to do next...

That rhythm has a way of showing up, too.

As we begin a new month, I've been thinking about the word rhythm.

Not routines.  Rhythms.  Because I think there's a difference.

A routine depends on everything happening according to plan.  A rhythm is something you can return to, even when the plan falls apart.  The goal has never been to create a life without interruptions.

That's impossible.

Plans change.
Vehicles break down.
People disappoint us.
Unexpected phone calls come.
Life will always have other plans.

The question isn't whether interruptions will happen.

The question is: What rhythm will they reveal?

There's one moment from that evening I keep coming back to.  We couldn't change the situation.  The van wasn't suddenly going to fix itself because we were frustrated.  The tow truck wasn't going to arrive any faster because we were impatient.

But we could choose the atmosphere inside the coach.

We could choose whether those hours were filled with frustration or conversation.  Whether we focused on what had gone wrong... or simply accepted what was true and made the best of it.  That didn't mean pretending everything was wonderful.  It didn't mean we weren't disappointed.  It simply meant we weren't going to let the interruption decide the atmosphere inside the coach while we waited.

Isn't that true in so many areas of life?

We may not be able to choose every circumstance we face.  But we can often choose the atmosphere we create within it.

Sometimes, that changes everything.  So this week, if life has other plans...

If your carefully organized schedule suddenly changes...  If an unexpected interruption catches you by surprise...

Before asking,

"How do I get everything back on track?"

Pause long enough to ask a different question.

"What rhythm am I practicing right now?"

Because interruptions don't create our rhythm.  They reveal the rhythm we've been practicing all along.  And every ordinary day gives us another opportunity to practice the kind of rhythm we hope will show up when life has other plans.

Until next time...

What Are You Saving for Someday?

There was something I noticed this week that made me stop and smile. I have a collection of beautiful, brand-new notebooks sitting on a bookshelf. Some were gifts. A few I found while wandering through little bookstores or gift shops. Others were simply too pretty to leave behind. Every one of them felt like it was waiting for something important.

The funny thing is...many of them are still empty.

Apparently, I've been waiting for the "right" thoughts, the "right" project, the "right" season of life.

As I laughed at myself, I realized I'm not really saving the notebook.

I'm saving permission to use it.

That little realization reminded me of something I've seen more than once during my years working in eldercare.

Families eventually find themselves sorting through the belongings of someone they loved. They open closets, drawers, and boxes filled with a lifetime of memories. Sometimes they discover things that tell beautiful stories. Other times, they discover things that tell heartbreaking ones.

A friend once shared that while cleaning out her mother's closet, she found a beautiful dress with the tags still attached. Her mother had been saving it for a special occasion.

As she stood there holding the dress, she quietly realized...  The special occasion never arrived.  That story has stayed with me ever since.  Not because of the dress.  Because I wonder how often we quietly do the same thing with our own lives.

Maybe we aren't saving a dress.

Maybe we're saving permission.

Permission to slow down.

Permission to celebrate.

Permission to use the beautiful notebook.

Permission to enjoy an ordinary Tuesday simply because we're alive to experience it.

But somewhere along the way, I wonder if we've unintentionally started believing that ordinary days aren't worthy of beautiful things.

Maybe that's why so many of us keep waiting. Not because we're afraid. Not because we don't appreciate what we have. But because we've quietly convinced ourselves that life will announce when the "right" moment has arrived.

The truth is, it rarely does.

Life isn't made up only of milestones and celebrations. It's mostly made up of Tuesday afternoons, morning coffee, conversations around the kitchen table, a walk after dinner, and a quiet hour with a journal.

Those little moments often become the ones we remember most.

When we keep saving the good things for later, we sometimes miss the beauty that's already sitting in front of us today. Not because we're careless, but because we're looking past today toward a future that somehow feels more deserving.

I've started wondering if permission isn't something we receive.

Maybe it's something we gently give ourselves. Permission to enjoy. Permission to celebrate. Permission to make an ordinary day feel just a little more special.

Not because we've earned it.

Simply because we're here.

Because this day, like every other, is part of our life.

I recently came across an RV travel channel called Today Is Someday, and I found myself smiling before I even watched the video. Their name alone felt like a gentle reminder. We spend so much of life saying, Someday I'll... But what if someday isn't waiting somewhere out on the horizon?

Maybe someday has quietly become today.

Maybe this ordinary morning is the one you've been waiting for all along.

None of us knows how many "special occasions" we'll actually be given.

Maybe today is someday.

One Intentional Step

Choose one thing you've been saving for "the right time."

Light the candle.

Use the notebook.

Wear the favorite outfit.

Open the good bottle.

Whatever it is, let today be special simply because you're living it.

Continue the Conversation

I'd love to hear from you.

What have you been saving for someday?

And what is one small thing you'll choose to enjoy this week instead of waiting for the perfect moment?

Share your thoughts in the comments. You may inspire someone else to stop waiting, too.

Until next time...

Light at the End of the Tunnel: Rising Stronger from Seasons of Sadness

This morning, I found myself sitting on my porch, listening to the soft rhythm of the
rain on a quiet Sunday. The sky was heavy, the clouds unyielding, and yet I sat waiting—because I knew the sun would eventually break through. In that moment, I was reminded that life is much the same.

We all walk through tunnels at different points in our lives. They are those seasons that feel heavy, shadowed, and uncertain—the times when sadness lingers and hope feels far away. In the tunnel, it can seem endless. But here’s the truth: every tunnel has an exit, and every season of darkness eventually gives way to light.

Seasons of Sadness

Life comes in seasons, and sadness is one of them. Just as winter eventually melts into spring, sadness too has its cycle. It is okay—necessary even—to sit with the sadness, to feel it, to acknowledge the weight of it. Pretending it isn’t there only prolongs the journey. But sadness was never meant to be a permanent home; it is a passageway.

Guided and Surrounded

When we feel most alone, we are never truly alone. Angels, guides, and guardians surround us, lifting us when we stumble, guiding us when the path is unclear, and holding us when we feel too weary to keep walking. The good Lord above watches over every step, reminding us that even in our darkest hours, light is on the horizon.

A Father’s Reminder

I was reminded of this truth today, when a dear friend shared a Father’s Day post (it is Father’s Day in Australia). It brought me back to my own father, who used to sing, “What a Difference a Day Makes,” and call me “Little One.” When life felt heavy, he would remind me, “When the skies seem their darkest is when the sun will always shine its brightest.”

Those words have stayed with me my entire life. They are a reminder that even when everything feels overwhelming, hope is already on its way. Sometimes, all it takes is holding on through the night to witness a brand-new dawn.

Choosing to Emerge

The tunnel asks for courage. It asks us to keep moving forward, even when our eyes can’t yet see the exit. It asks us to trust the unseen support around us. And most importantly, it asks us to choose—to choose to rise again, to choose hope, to choose happiness even in the face of immense adversity.

Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, we too have the opportunity to emerge from sadness renewed—wiser, stronger, and shining brighter than ever before.

Drawn to the Light

Perhaps this is why I’ve always had such an obsession with sunlight—I absolutely love it. The sun recharges my very soul. No matter how many rainy days come, I know the sunshine is waiting, and when it pours over me, I feel whole again. Maybe you’ve felt that too—that deep sigh of relief and renewal when the light touches your skin. That’s what hope feels like. It’s always worth waiting for.

Brighter Days Ahead

The tunnel will not last forever. Sadness is a season, not a destination. The sun will break through, and when it does, you will feel the warmth of joy again. Until then, hold on. Rest when you must. Trust that you are surrounded, supported, and deeply loved.

Because the light is coming. And when it shines, you will be radiant.

If You're Not Having Fun, It's Time to Change Something

Life is a journey—sometimes wild, sometimes winding—but at its core, it’s meant to be lived and enjoyed. Yes, there will be challenges and responsibilities, but joy should never be a rare guest in your story. If you're not having fun or feeling inspired, that’s your cue: it’s time to pause, reflect, and consider a change.

The older I get, the more I come to cherish life—not just in the big milestones, but in the quiet, everyday moments. This sense of appreciation has only grown stronger as I’ve witnessed people I know face illness or lose loved ones—sometimes unexpectedly, and other times far too soon. It has deepened my gratitude for every precious minute we’re given.

Life Is Meant to Feel Alive

From ancient philosophers to modern thought leaders, the pursuit of happiness has been a timeless aspiration. But in the whirlwind of daily life, it’s easy to forget: joy isn’t optional—it’s essential. When your days start to feel like a loop of monotony, stress, or disconnection, it’s a sign that something needs to shift.

Why Does the Fun Fade?

Here are a few common culprits:

  • Falling into Routine: Predictability can be comforting, but too much of it can dull your spark.

  • Living Inside the Lines: Fear and comfort zones keep us from growth, excitement, and the unknown adventures that ignite our soul.

  • Following Others’ Scripts: Society, family, or peers may influence you to chase goals that aren't yours.

  • Negative Thinking: A critical mindset makes joy harder to recognize—even when it’s right in front of you.

  • Neglecting Yourself: When self-care is sidelined, joy has less room to thrive.

How to Reclaim Your Joy

If the fun is gone, you don’t have to keep trudging along. Here's how to shift gears and start living with more lightness:

  1. Get Honest with Yourself: What’s not working? What does light you up? Reconnect with your passions.

  2. Shake Things Up: Try something new—big or small. New experiences open the door to new energy.

  3. Create Meaningful Goals: Find purpose-driven goals that align with who you are—not who you think you're supposed to be.

  4. Train Your Brain for Positivity: Practicing gratitude and presence helps rewire your perspective toward joy.

  5. Build a Joy-Filled Circle: Surround yourself with people who uplift you and celebrate your growth.

  6. Take Care of You: Nourish your body, mind, and spirit. Rest, play, move, breathe.

  7. Celebrate the Little Things: Progress is progress. Small wins matter and deserve your attention.

Joy is Contagious

When you prioritize your own joy, something magical happens—it spreads. Your energy uplifts others. Your courage gives people permission to chase their own happiness. One shift can create a ripple effect that goes far beyond you.

A Final Reminder

You are not stuck. You are not powerless. And it is never too late to rewrite your story. If you're not having fun, don't wait for permission—change the narrative. You deserve a life that feels good on the inside, not just one that looks good on the outside.

So go on—make a change, take the leap, and let joy lead the way.

Need a little assistance - let me know and we can find that joy together...

Be well,
Mary-Anne

Week 9: Embracing the Journey of Self-Discovery: A Path to Your Truest Self

Self-discovery is one of the most rewarding, transformative, and ongoing journeys we undertake in life. It is not about finding a fixed destination but about continuously evolving into the most authentic version of yourself.

I remember a pivotal moment when I stepped back to reflect on my life, realizing that I had been chasing goals that didn’t truly align with who I wanted to become. That revelation wasn’t the end of my journey—it was the beginning. It was in that moment that I understood self-discovery isn’t about checking off a list of accomplishments but about deepening my relationship with myself, my purpose, and my passions.

This journey isn’t always easy. At times, it can feel uncertain, challenging, and even uncomfortable. But it is also filled with profound joy, clarity, and fulfillment. Let’s explore how to embrace self-discovery with intention and curiosity so that you can walk this path with confidence and grace.

Why Self-Discovery Matters

Understanding yourself on a deeper level empowers you to live a more intentional, fulfilling life. Here’s why embracing self-discovery is so important:

  • Deepens Self-Understanding: It helps you uncover your core values, strengths, and passions, allowing you to make decisions that align with your authentic self.
  • Fosters Personal Growth: It encourages you to challenge old beliefs, explore new perspectives, and embrace continuous learning.
  • Enhances Authenticity: When you understand who you truly are, you can align your actions with your values and live in a way that feels genuine and fulfilling.
  • Builds Resilience: Self-discovery teaches you how to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence and grace, strengthening your emotional and mental well-being.

Ways to Embrace Self-Discovery

There are many ways to embark on the path of self-discovery. The key is to stay open-minded, curious, and patient with yourself. Here are a few powerful ways to explore this journey:

  • Reflect Through Journaling: Writing allows you to connect with your inner thoughts and emotions. Try prompts like “Who am I becoming?” or “What brings me joy?” Journaling helps clarify your desires, fears, and dreams, providing insight into your evolving self.
  • Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Growth happens when we push beyond what feels familiar. Try new experiences—whether it’s a creative hobby, a challenging task, or an adventurous trip. Every new experience reveals a piece of your true self.
  • Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Being present with yourself allows you to tune into your inner voice and intuition. Set aside time to meditate, practice deep breathing, or simply sit in stillness. The answers you seek often emerge in quiet moments.
  • Cultivate Self-Compassion: The journey of self-discovery isn’t always linear. Be patient and kind to yourself. Embrace the setbacks as learning opportunities and celebrate every step forward.
  • Engage in Meaningful Conversations: Surround yourself with people who inspire you and encourage self-reflection. Deep, honest conversations with trusted friends, mentors, or coaches can provide valuable insights about yourself.

Supporting Tools for Self-Discovery

To further enhance your journey, consider incorporating tools that support self-awareness and clarity:

  • Crystals: Certain crystals can aid in self-discovery. Sodalite enhances self-awareness and inner truth, while citrine brings clarity of purpose and confidence. Carry them with you or use them in meditation.
  • Affirmations: The words we tell ourselves shape our reality. Use affirmations like:
    • “I am open to discovering who I truly am.”
    • “Every day, I grow into the person I am meant to be.”
    • “I trust the process of my journey.”
  • Visualization Practices: Imagine the best version of yourself and visualize your ideal life. This practice can help you manifest the clarity and confidence needed to move toward your goals.

Embrace the Journey With Gratitude

Self-discovery is a lifelong adventure, filled with twists, turns, and revelations. Rather than seeking an ultimate answer, embrace the unfolding process with curiosity, patience, and gratitude. Trust that every experience—both the highs and the lows—is guiding you toward the person you are meant to be.

You are not lost. You are becoming. Keep exploring, keep learning, and keep growing. Your true self is waiting to be discovered.

Be Well,
Mary-Anne

Week 2: The Transformative Power of Gratitude: Small Shifts, Big Changes

It started with a simple realization. After a particularly hectic day, I sat down with my journal and decided to jot down three things I was grateful for. At first, the list felt forced—“my chai tea latte,” “a good song on the radio,” “the quiet evening”. But as I wrote, something shifted. I began noticing the little things I’d overlooked: a kind word from a friend, the way the sunlight hit the trees, even the comfort of my favorite sweater. Gratitude, it turns out, is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

If you’ve ever felt stuck or overwhelmed, gratitude can be a powerful tool for transformation. Let’s dive into how this practice can shift your perspective and invite more joy into your life.

Why Gratitude Matters:

  • Rewires Your Brain: Studies show that gratitude reduces stress, improves mood, and strengthens relationships.
  • Shifts Your Focus: Gratitude helps move your attention from lack to abundance.
  • Attracts Positivity: The more you appreciate, the more you invite abundance and joy.

Simple Gratitude Practices to Start Today:

  1. Morning Gratitude Journaling: Write three things you’re grateful for each morning. They can be as simple as a warm cup of tea or as meaningful as a loved one’s support.
  2. Gratitude Walk: Take a walk and mentally list things you’re thankful for—the fresh air, the strength in your legs, or the beauty of nature.
  3. Gratitude Jar: Keep a jar where you jot down moments of gratitude throughout the week. Watch it fill with reminders of joy.

Overcoming Gratitude Challenges:

  • On tough days, start small. Gratitude doesn’t need to be grandiose; even finding one small thing to appreciate can make a difference.
  • Practice self-compassion. Gratitude isn’t about ignoring challenges but choosing to see the good alongside them.

Incorporating Gratitude into Intentional Living:

  • Pair gratitude with your daily rituals, like sipping your morning coffee or doing evening reflections.
  • Use affirmation decks or crystal jewelry to amplify your gratitude intentions.

Gratitude is a practice, not a destination. It’s about noticing and appreciating the beauty in the everyday, even when life feels overwhelming. This week, take a few moments each day to lean into gratitude—you might be surprised at how transformative it can be.

Let’s continue building a life of balance and joy, one grateful moment at a time.
